The Platform of Human Rights Organisations in Malta (PHROM) is extremely shocked at news of the tragic death of a teenager. This news is heart-breaking not only because it involves the death of a young person, but because the death seems to have been the result of a number of institutional failures. At a time when Malta boasts unprecedented economic growth, it seems unable to take care of its most vulnerable.
We fully share the sentiments and recommendations expressed by the Alliance for Mental Health (A4MH) in its statement. In particular, we support its call for a new national mental health strategy that prioritises community care and crisis services, coupled with adequate funding for its development.
We also strongly urge the authorities to ensure a prompt and independent inquiry into the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident, with a view to identifying those preventive mechanisms that ought to be immediately put in place.
